In recent years Bulgaria has positioned itself as an emerging wine and travel destination as well as a host of prestigious wine events.The 2016 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Wine Competition was held in Plovdiv - the second largest city of Bulgaria and the European Cultural Capital of 2019. The event turned out to be a tremendous success for Bulgarian wine producers and winemakers. the Bulgarian wines won 109 medals - the record amount in the history. Bulgaria doesn't stop to impress and surprise. This year Bulgaria will host the WORLD CONGRESS OF VINE AND WINE 2017. 
Bulgarian government approved the hosting of the 40th World Congress of Vine and Wine and the 15th General Assembly of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), which will take place between 29 May and - June 2, 2017 in Sofia.

The event will be held in conjunction with the sixth edition of the BALKANS INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION AND FESTIVAL (Sofia, 1-4 June 2017). 

What is the Balkans International Wine Competition & Festival?

THE BALKANS INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION is a venue for world wine experts, Masters of Wine, wine merchants, and wine journalists and bloggers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, India, Italy, the Scandinavian countries, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, among others.

THE BALKANS INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION will host representatives of the global wine connoisseur elite. Some of the world’s most qualified and demanding palates will taste and judge the best wines of the Balkans, and discover their unique character, richness, and regional complexity.

THE BALKANS INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION proves to be the most important step in the promotion of the Balkan wines, to help them find their way to the tables of the world’s wine-loving community and earn their due share of the global wine market.

The OIV is an intergovernmental organization of a scientific and technical nature of recognized competence for its works concerning vines, wine, wine-based beverages, table grapes, raisins and other vine-based products.The holding of this prestigious forum in Bulgaria is a huge advertisement for Bulgarian and Balkan wine as well as Bulgaria as a winemaking country and the Balkan wine area. An event of this magnitude is a great opportunity to exchange experiences and give a great presentation of our country as a travel destination for cultural and wine tourism. During the congress world-renowned experts from around the world will share their experience and achievements will be discussed technical and scientific topics and will be able to implement a useful exchange of experience and innovation.


The Congress is expected to bring together more than 1,000 representatives from all 46 member states of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine.

The forum will give huge publicity to Bulgarian wine and to Bulgaria itself as a wine-producing country, the cabinet has said in a statement.
