Young Wine in Old Houses: Explore Historical Heritage and Taste Bulgarian Wine
There is no better spiritual place than over 4000 BC Old Town of Plovdiv to celebrate Bulgarian Young Wine Parade.
Young Wine Parade is an annual festival that is organized during the last Friday, Saturday and Sunday of November in different ancient houses, art galleries, museums of the Old town of Plovdiv. The mission of the event to introduce young Bulgarian wines and promote the good qualities young (and not only!) Bulgarian wine. The Young Wine Parade has been conducted since 2009 and its attendance becomes bigger in number every year. The Young Wine Parade 2016 wasn't an exception. This year 32 wineries shared their young wines with more than 18 000 visitors!
The whole week before the Young Wine Parade was a celebration devoted to Bulgarian culture and traditions: folklore dances, culinary workshops, exhibitions and loads of wine. As for the native Bulgarian grape varieties: Melnik, Pamid, Gamza, Mavrud, Rubin were the attractions of the 3-days wine event.
Young Wine Parade: The Autumn Wine Celebration
The Council of Tourism Plovdiv together with Plovdiv Municipality annually organizes “The Young Wine Parade” in active partnership with the National Vine and Wine Chamber, Municipal Institute “Old Plovdiv”, Bulgarian Wine Association, The European Knights Order, Municipal Enterprise “Tourism”, Plovdiv 2019 Foundation, professional high schools and universities, catering firms, souvenir producers and all the participants in the wine business as well as the institutions in charge of the culture and art in the city.
The creation of an attractive wine destination and occasion for a visit raises the awareness of guests from all over Bulgaria as well as from broad. The unique atmosphere was created due to the old houses along with young wines. The tastings were accompanied by awards for the best young wine ("Golden Dionysus" awards), cultural events, presentations, dedicated to Bulgarian wine routes and regional wines, up-to-date information about and for the wine producers. The entertainment program combined with the participation of the dozens of locations and the opportunity for an active communication. All these things turned the Young Wine Parade into an important hot-spot of Plovdiv cultural calendar.
Since its start in 2009, the Wine Parade in Plovdiv marked the beginning of consumption of young wine through local events in different regions and created a tradition for its use. The organized tastings of young wine are part of the Bulgarian wine culture and an opportunity for wineries to tell more about their wines to all the wine-loving audience.
The Results of Young Wine Parade 2016: Who Grabbed "Golden Dionysus"?
On the 26th of November during so-called "The Evening of the Masters of Wine", the results of the competition between young wines were announced.
The awards for the best young white, red and rose wines, under the regulations, defined by the tasting committee, are the following:
- "Golden Dionysus" in the category of "Best Red Wine" was awarded to Bouquet from Edoardo Miroglio.
- "Golden Dionysus" for best white wine in the tasting competition and for the best young wine 2016 was given to the Minkov Brothers for their Sauvignon Blanc.
The special award was given to Santa Maria Winery for their Blend Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc.
- Rubin from Bendida Enoteca was chosen as the best "newborn" rosé.
